One Washburn University football player was killed and another was injured in a shooting that took place at a social gathering. Twenty-three year old Dwane Simmons was found dead at the scene. Simmons was a defensive back for the Washburn Ichabods. The other football player was cornerback Corey Ballentine. Just hours before the shooting occurred, Ballentine had his dreams come true. He was selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. The sixth-round selection of the New York Giants was injured in the shooting, but his injuries were not life-threatening and is expected to make a full recovery. Topeka police spokeswoman Gretchen Koenen commented on the shooting adding that there were dozens of people at the gathering during the time of the shooting, and Topeka police officers are gathering statements from others in attendance. No arrests have yet been made.
