Tax Levies are likely to increase in Stearns County. On Tuesday, the Stearns County Board members have approved of a preliminary 2019 levy of $80.5 million; a 3.8% increase from this year. Meaning there will be a 3.8% increase in property tax; although Stearns County is having an increase in property values, the property tax rates are expected to decrease. Stearns County Commissioner Steve Notch says, “None of us want to see these tax increases. Some of these things you can’t avoid. overhead costs, that’s out of our control.” The new Stearns Country budget increase from the higher property tax will assist in funding three new full-time positions including two legal secretaries and a human resources learning and development coordinator. According to County documents the costs of running the Stearns County jail has also increased, requiring more compensation. The budget of Stearns County can still be worked on, and it is possible that the tax rates and levies will be changed before 2019.
