Kendrick Lamar, a 12 time Grammy winning rapper, has now added a unique award to his trophy case: a Pulitzer Prize for music. The honor comes for his critically-acclaimed studio album “DAMN.”, released in April 2017. Kendrick is the first non-jazz or classical musician to win the award, which is typically given to classical works. The Pulitzer board voted unanimously to give the prize to Kendrick for “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life”. The Pulitzer Prize Board lists the musical award as being “For a distinguished musical composition by an American that has had its first performance or recording in the United States during the year.”
