ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota is joining with California in a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s proposal to include a citizenship question in the 202 census.
The lawsuit was filed by California’s General Attorney Xaiever Becerra on Tuesday and several other states, as well as Minnesota, have since joined in on the lawsuit. Officials in other states have also began contemplating their own lawsuit against the plan.
Democrats worry that the citizenship question will lead immigrants to avoid the survey altogether which would dilute political representation for states that vote Democratic.
State representatives signed a letter on Thursday thanking the Minnesota General Attorney Lisa Swanson for joining California in the lawsuit.
