A helicopter crashed in the river of Manhattan’s East River and left five people dead due to the engine failing. As the helicopter began to crash down to the water, the pilot announced into the radio transmitter that the engine was unsuccessful and he yelled “Mayday, mayday, mayday” as the chopper went down.
The incident occurred on Sunday, March 11 and the helicopter was being used for a photo shoot by the company Liberty Helicopters. When the pilot was radioing in as the engine was failing, the receiver of the message had a difficult time understanding what was being stated by the pilot, and dispatchers were sent out on Monday to recover the helicopter and the people aboard the flight.
When dispatchers arrived, the pilot was able to get himself free from the helicopter after it had crashed, but the passengers were still strapped in, upside down when help arrived. The pilot was safely taken away by a tugboat.
