Boy killed in Elk River by Northstar commuter rail

A tragedy hit close to home on Sunday night as a teenager was struck by the Northstar Commuter train in Elk River at approximately Ogden St. SW and 192nd Ave. NW. The teen was hit at about 6 p.m. as the victim along with another person were walking across the tracks westbound and the train hit the one pedestrian.

According to Metro Transit Spokesman Howie Padilla, the two pedestrians were walking near the tracks and one of the people was walking on the tracks and was hit by the train and ultimately killed. The other pedestrian was able

to get away from the train and left the scene uninjured. Additionally, Padilla said that there is no area for pedestrians to safely cross, which leads to reasoning as to why the person was struck.

According to officials, they said that it is unknown as to why the two pedestrians were walking on the railroad tracks. Initially, the name of the victim that was struck was not released, but the 17-year-old boy was later identified as Grayson McKay Dow who is a resident of Elk River.

When the train struck the boy, there were passengers on the train at the time and following the incident, the railroad track was out of commission for nearly two hours, Padilla said.
