The special council headed up by Robert Mueller saw more legal action after the weekend’s indictments of thirteen Russians who are accused of attempting to meddle in American elections. Today’s news came when the Mueller team charged lawyer Alex van Der Zwaan of lying to investigators in about his interactions with former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates. Van Der Zwaan attended a hearing on Tuesday afternoon where he entered a guilty plea to the charge. The crime is not related to election meddling or Trump campaign operations, it instead connects with a lobbying campaign allegedly led by Paul Manafort and Gates on behalf of pro-Russian Ukranians. Manafort and Gates were both indicted last year on charges of conspiracy to launder money and acting as unregistered foreign agents.
