16 Year Old Receives Plea Offer to Reduce Felony Charges in Killing

Driving while using a cell phone is extremely distracting – and dangerous.

A 16-year-old from Sibley County who killed a bicyclist while using her cell phone and driving has received a plea deal from the Sibley County Attorney’s Office to reduce felony gross negligence to misdemeanor reckless driving. The teen killed 56-year-old Phillip Ilg while he was biking in June of 2017 when her cell phone distracted her from the road. The family of Ilg have expressed their unhappiness with the plea deal for the teen and are attending a Tuesday hearing where a Sibley County judge will decide whether to accept or deny the plea.
